It’s going to help you to eat more healthy and it’s going to help you to also lose weight. Let’s jump back into the subject of losing weight and realize that weight loss is really pretty simple. You eat less. You exercise more. You burn more calories. You lose weight. Very, very simple. Guess what? It isn’t working. A lot of people can’t seem to do that.
If you have that problem, then you need to please listen. I’m going to spend about ten to twelve minutes today talking about the root issue of weight loss and it’s going to set you free. It’s going to give you some information you never had before. Weight loss is not simple. There’s a reason it’s not simple. If it was simple, everybody would be doing it, but the problem is that people are not doing it. The reason or why we know that is because do you know … These are shocking statistics, but two out of every three adults in the United States are overweight or obese. Oh my gosh. That’s 68.8% and that’s a real problem.
You think that people would recognize there’s not only a weight issue and an obesity issue, but there’s a health issue. The health issue is really serious and it’s a problem. The reason it’s a problem is because of the diseases that come because of being overweight or obese. One of the big ones is type-two diabetes. Another one is high blood pressure. It’s going to be very difficult to have great health with high blood pressure and type-two diabetes, but then there’s also cancer. Cancer’s a real problem for people that are overweight and obese. The number one killer in the United States is heart disease and if you’re carrying too much weight, you’re putting too much stress on your heart, that’s going to be a real problem, so you’d think that the specter or the future of a person’s life being threatened by those diseases … You think that would be enough, but it’s not.
It’s not enough and there’s a reason for that because we know that the issue of obesity and overweight really, really is epidemic. It is one of the worst problems in the United States. We’re finding that people are just struggling and struggling and struggling. We want to know why. Don’t you want to know why? I’m going to tell you why. It’s because of this. My wife and I believe, and we have documented, we’ve studied, we have seen the truth that the real reason for people being overweight is, yes, they eat too much and they don’t eat the right foods and, yes, that’s all true, but the real reason is what we believe about ourselves. If we believe that we are not valuable, not important, and not worthy, we’re going to be in problems because we’re going to be in emotional pain.
We know from studies of 20 years of studies and we’ve seen it in people in our church. We have a number of people that we’re working with. The trauma, childhood trauma, is the real issue because, see, any time you’re traumatized, there’s going to be emotional pain. Now, some people think of trauma as just being a situation where there’s some over … People getting over stress. Let me tell you. Trauma is a lot worse than that. Trauma is defined by people that study the brain as being a situation where any time the central nervous system is overwhelmed, we are traumatized. Well, my goodness, we’ve all been traumatized because even if we were lost in the store, even if we got hit over the head by somebody at the school yard, that’s trauma. Not only physical trauma in that case, but being lost in the store is trauma.
Any time our central nervous system is overwhelmed. Think of all the times that you as a child had a central nervous system that was overwhelmed. Now, here is the key, and that is trauma always brings psychological pain. Every trauma that we experienced as a child brings psychological pain. Some of you were abused. Some of you were abused physically. Some of you were abused emotionally and God forbid some of you were actually abused sexually and then some of you were neglected. All of that brings great emotional pain, not small emotional pain, great emotional pain. Since God didn’t really provide for us to handle pain well, we have a real motivation to get rid of pain because pain is not something that anybody signs up for. I don’t know anybody that signs up for serious emotional pain.
If we have emotional pain and we can’t handle it, what are we going to do? Well, we’re going to medicate. We’re going to find ways to be able to stop the pain. Well, you know what? There’s a lot of ways to stop the pain. I’m not going to be able to go into those, but I’m going to talk about food because food is the issue here. Guess what food does? Studies have shown that eating fats and eating sugars will produce in the brain chemicals. Guess what those chemicals do? Well, those chemicals produce dopamine. That’s a big word for saying well-being and satisfaction. Guess what? It’s like a cocaine hit or a heroin hit and you wonder why eating a bag of potato chips feels so good. You wonder why eating a pint of ice cream feels so good. The reason is because it produces brain chemicals and those brain chemicals are really dangerous. They will cause us to become addicted to food because it’s a comfort. It becomes comforting.
Food can bring a sense of well-being. The problem is not the food. It’s what the food does to the brain and that can become addictive. What we need to do is get to the root. The root of all emotional pain is trauma. We need to look at it and say, “Okay. If trauma is the issue. It’s not the food. The food’s the symptom. If trauma is the issue, then what do we do?” Well, we are experts. We have dedicated our lives, my wife and I and others, have dedicated our lives to helping people to get healed from trauma. We know what to do. We know how to do it and we can help you.
One of the things that’s so vitally important is that you get help because it’s not the food. Please understand it’s not the food. What it really is is it is the emotional pain you’re in.
